familiarization run series 4
Sunday, April 27, 2008

YESH! i finally completed my first marathon distance last night. with frenz from sgrunners & participants from hivelocity for its 4th ASM familiarization run. disappointingly it took me a pathetic time of 5hrs 55mins to complete the run. pace was 8.25mins/km at a speed of 7.12km/hr. timing was way under par my expected timing of 5hrs 15mins. was feeling good before the run. seeing soo many familiar faces from our previous run. it gave me the opportunity to interact and check out their preparations for their upcoming ASM. nonetheless managed to make some new frenz too!

the run was flagged off at changi beach park. started at the usual pace of 7mins/hr throughout the changi coastal road and east coast park (known as the string of lights) stretch of changi coastal road was a psychological torture. though its only less than 10km from the starting pt. it was a boring long.straight route which drags more than 7km. though it was demoralizing but running beside the changi runway with planes taking off alongside was something new to me. haas.

upon reaching east coast park. that's where all the temptation drew closer. bbq was everywhere on a saturday night. from pits to chalets. i could smell bbq food every 50m along east coast park. fortunately i was not that hungry at that moment. haas. head towards the 17km mark (water & banana pt) at approx. 1-1/2hr, had a 5mins stretching & water break before pounding towards the big splash to make a u-turn. as i was heading back a band (a pub named BFD i guess) sang bon jovi's "its my life" indeed a fantastic song to push me forward & told myself not to give up. as running is my life. haas. however i punctured when i had to cross the overhead bridge at the 22km mark. argh.

after crossing the ECP expressway. we ran through the heartlands of siglap, kembangan and bedok reservoir. had to excuse from time to buy isotonic drinks at a petrol kiosk along changi road before proceeding to the bedok town park for our next water pt station at the 27km mark. had a 10mins stretching & water break before pounding towards the finishing point back at changi beach park alongside with laserunner & an ultra-marathoner (my apologies i forgot your name) laserunner & i was running along tamp ave 9 when she hurt herself. that's when we spent plenty time at the petrol kiosk cleaning her wound & plastering.

my fatigue level reached to the max at the 35km mark after series of walk-jog. that's when my mind told me am really tired & hungry and my hairy legs couldnt take it anymore. though i still slow-jogged along loyang ave. had to walk towards the finishing point from hendon camp as my pulled hamstrings and exhaustion cant pushed me forward further.

my priority at that moment was to complete the run and timing wasnt a concern to me anymore. since it was my first attempt running a marathon. one thing for sure. am NOT prepared to run a marathon distance! yesterday's night run was to exprience the feeling of a marathon and gauge myself for the upcoming ASM. as well as to prevent injuries on that day. lots of factors encountered from yesterday's run - fatigue.hunger.abrasions.pulled muscles generally it was incredible running under the moon & stars. cheers to ripley & gang who made this run possible!

best's whole body is aching and needs plenty of rest... ...

cheers.ciaoz
